Nuffield Research Placements offer over 1000 funded placements a year to UK year 12 students wanting to get an insight into the world of Scientific research and development (including Maths, Engineering, Computing etc). Through the scheme, students get the opportunity to work alongside practising scientists, technologist, engineers and mathematicians in the workplace, for 4 weeks during their summer holidays.

To be eligible to apply for the scheme, students must be in the first year of a STEM A level/BTEC course (year 12), have 5 grade B+ GCSEs (inc English, Maths and a Science), resident permanently in the UK, and available for 4 weeks during the summer.

We are particularly keen to reach students who are less likely to go into STEM research jobs, and recognise that income can be a barrier to participation in these kinds of schemes. Every participant can reclaim their travel expenses, and many are also eligible for an £80 p/w bursary (family income under £30k, FSM, or in care).

Benefits of participating include:

  • Work on a specific research or development project, which is well defined from the start – not just making teas and coffees or doing the filing!
  • The project report and accompanying scientific poster that is produced are fantastic pieces for the student’s portfolio.
  • Projects make a genuine contribution to the work of the host organisation. The work students do will be valued and make a real impact.
  • Students can apply for a Gold CREST Award, the only STEM scheme to be accredited by UCAS.
  • Students and guests are invited to a formal celebration event to enjoy and celebrate their achievements.

Each year, applications can be made between December and March (exact deadlines can be found on the Nuffield Research Placements website), by students who are currently in the first year of an advanced or higher STEM course (year 12). Places on the scheme are in high demand, so applications should be carefully written to show the student’s enthusiasm and dedication in order to give the best chance of success.
